Pamukkale, meaning "cotton castle" in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey. The area is famous for a carbonate mineral left by the flowing of thermal spring water.
The Travertines
The white calcium pools are a surreal sight. You can walk barefoot on the travertines and even wade in some of the pools. The warm water is believed to have healing properties.
Hierapolis Ancient City
Located immediately above the travertines is Hierapolis. Founded as a thermal spa early in the 2nd century BC, the city became a healing center where doctors used the thermal springs as a treatment.
Cleopatra's Pool
Don't miss the chance to swim in the Antique Pool, also known as Cleopatra's Pool. You'll be swimming among ancient columns and marble blocks that fell into the water during an earthquake.
